Proton e.MAS Promotes Better Charging Etiquette As Malaysia’s Ev Community Grows

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption continues to accelerate in Malaysia, Proton New Energy Technology Sdn Bhd (PRO-NET), the company behind the Proton e.MAS brand, is encouraging EV owners to adopt good charging etiquette and play their part in creating a more considerate charging experience for everyone.

With a 60.9% share of Malaysia’s EV market, Proton e.MAS is currently the country’s leading EV brand, with three segment-leading models: the Proton e.MAS 5, Malaysia’s No. 1 EV model; Proton e.MAS 7, the No. 1 C-segment EV SUV; and Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV, the No. 1 PHEV model. As more Proton e.MAS vehicles take to Malaysian roads, PRO-NET believes this market leadership also comes with a responsibility to help shape positive habits within the wider EV community, regardless of vehicle make or model.

The growing adoption of EVs represents more than a shift in the type of vehicles Malaysians drive. It also introduces new behaviours and shared spaces, particularly at public charging stations. As more EV owners depend on public chargers, simple acts of consideration can make a significant difference in ensuring everyone has a fair opportunity to charge.

This is particularly important as Malaysia's charging infrastructure continues to expand. Through its Integrated Live Charging Map, PRO-NET provides EV users with access to information on more than 5,100 charging points covering 90% of the nation. Its charging ecosystem also includes more than 2,000 charging points across over 700 high-rise residential developments, helping EV owners charge closer to home, as well as 103 DC charging points across its dealership network.

“With more EVs on the road and more charging points becoming available, charging is increasingly becoming part of everyday life for Malaysian motorists. This makes it important for all of us to develop good habits from the beginning,” said Ahmad Munif Halim, Head of Charging, PRO-NET.

“The EV community in Malaysia is still relatively young, so the habits we form today can shape the charging experience for years to come. We want charging to be a pleasant experience for everyone. Whether you drive a Proton e.MAS or another EV brand, we all share the same charging infrastructure. A little consideration, patience and awareness can go a long way in making public charging better for the entire community.”

To encourage these habits, PRO-NET has introduced a series of EV charging etiquette messages at selected JomCharge public charging stations, providing simple reminders to EV users at the point where they matter most: when using a public charger.

The messages cover practical considerations such as charging only for as long as necessary, moving the vehicle once charging is complete, keeping charging bays accessible and being mindful of other EV owners waiting to charge.

The same charging etiquette tips will also be provided to new Proton e.MAS owners upon collection of their vehicles, helping to introduce responsible charging practices from the very beginning of their EV ownership journey.

Puan Salawati Mohd Yusoff, Chief Branding Officer of PRO-NET, said the initiative reflects the responsibility that comes with being one of Malaysia’s most visible EV brands. “With the growing number of Proton e.MAS vehicles on Malaysian roads, our owners have an opportunity to set the standard for what good EV ownership looks like. That responsibility extends beyond how we drive. It also includes how we use shared charging infrastructure and how we treat fellow EV owners,” said Puan Salawati.

“We want Proton e.MAS owners to lead by example. As a national EV brand with a growing presence across the country, we believe our community can help establish positive habits for everyone to follow. Ultimately, good charging etiquette should not depend on the badge on the bonnet. It should simply be part of being an EV owner.”

Proton e.MAS is committed to supporting the country’s transition towards electrified mobility. The continued expansion of EV charging infrastructure forms part of PRO-NET’s mission, supporting the growing number of EV users while contributing to the nation’s broader ambitions for EV adoption and localisation.

As the EV ecosystem continues to mature, PRO-NET will continue to work towards expanding charging accessibility while encouraging responsible usage, helping to create an EV community where charging infrastructure is shared fairly and the experience is better for everyone.
