PROTON continued its excellent sales performance in 2026 by posting a strong start to Q2. Group sales of 18,156 units in April brings the year-to-date (YTD) sales figure to 67,298 units, an increase of 40.9% in year-on-year sales volume and in line with the company’s aim to achieve 200,000 sales this year.
During the same period, Total-Industry-Volume (TIV) for Malaysian car sales is estimated to have grown by 17.7% over April 2025 but the YTD figure shows a more modest increase of just 1.8%. Therefore, by outpacing market growth, PROTON has increased its market share with the YTD figure forecast to be at 26.4% while the market share for April is expected to land at 25%.
Proton Saga deliveries increase by 50% while Proton S70 posts best monthly sales volume
Sales of PROTON’s ICE models continue to power the brand forwards in 2026 with supply now catching up to market demand. The Proton Saga set a sales record in January, but supply issues dampened sales in the following two months. April saw a change in fortune as sales grew by 50.9% over the previous month to 8,207 units. This brings the YTD sales total for the first four months up to 29,977 units, which is an increase of 42.8% over 2025.
Another star performer in April was the Proton S70 C-segment sedan, which was updated on 11 February. With new exterior styling and the fitment of Proton’s highly regarded 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged i-GT engine, the model has found a new fan base attracted to its combination of styling, performance, connectivity features, and value. 2,377 units were sold in April, the best sales month in the model’s history, bringing the YTD total to 8,175 units, an increase of 32.3%.
Mirroring the demand for its sedans, Proton’s SUV lineup also had a very productive sales month. 2,603 units of the Proton X50 were sold in April to bring its YTD total to 10,174 units and keeping its status as the best-selling SUV in its segment and overall. Meanwhile, the Proton X90 continues its resurgence with sales in April surging by 43% to land at 462 units, its best performance since December 2023. Overall, sales for the recently updated 7-seat D-segment SUV are up by 28.1% compared to the previous year.
“PROTON’s continued sales surge to start 2026 is the result of our careful product planning and investment in new technologies as well as the sales and after sales service delivered by our network of dealerships. With so many new competitors lined up against our models, it is vital to deliver products that meet the needs of our customers while reinforcing brand image and consumer confidence through a first-class ownership experience.
“Overall, we are on the right path to achieve our targets for 2026 and with more launches and new initiatives in the pipeline for this year and the next few years beyond, PROTON hopes to be able to position itself as the best choice for Malaysian car buyers as well as the country’s leading export OEM,” said Dato’ Ir. Abdul Rashid Musa, Chief Executive Officer, Proton EDAR.
Proton e.MAS retains position as Malaysia’s leading EV brand
Proton e.MAS, the new energy arm of PROTON representing EV and PHEV models, continues to set new benchmarks in 2026 with April marking the latest highpoint for the brand. A total of 3,420 EV and PHEV models were sold, marking a new recorded high for Proton e.MAS, and bringing the YTD total to 11,664 units for the first four months of the year.

Its bigger brother, the Proton e.MAS 7 continues to add to its 2026 volume with a third consecutive month of sales growth. 636 units were delivered in April to bring its YTD total to 1,436 units.
The biggest mover for Proton e.MAS was the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV. In its second full month of sales, 1,013 units were delivered, allowing the model to retain its title as the best-selling PHEV in the country. To date, 1,755 units have already been sold with more set to be delivered in coming months as supply ramps up to meet market demand.
Zhang Qiang, Chief Executive Officer PRO-NET, said, “Proton e.MAS continues to attract the attention of Malaysians looking to enter the EV and PHEV market, thanks to our strong product lineup and dealer network. By introducing new colours and variants periodically, we keep interest levels high while remaining vigilant of the need to keep up with any technological advancements introduced. There will be more highlights to come in 2026, so we are confident of ending the year as Malaysia’s favourite EV and PHEV brand.”
