Hotel Casuarina@Meru and Tenaga Nasional Bhd unite to power Peraks’s green future through EV charging infrastructure

In a significant stride toward advancing sustainable tourism and green energy in Perak, Casuarina Meru Sdn Bhd (CMSB), a subsidiary of Perak Corporation Berhad; a public listed company under Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNPk), has formalised a leasing agreement with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) for the operation of electric vehicle (EV) charging station at Hotel Casuarina@Meru.

The collaboration was commemorated through an exchange of agreement ceremony, marking a pivotal public-private initiative to elevate Perak’s low-carbon mobility infrastructure in alignment with the Perak Sejahtera 2030 agenda.

The ceremony, held at the Casuarina Convention Centre, was officiated by YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak. Also present were YB Teh Kok Lim, Chairman of the Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee; Datuk Ir. Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan, President/CEO of TNB; Datuk Redza Rafiq Abdul Razak, the Chief Executive of PKNPk; En. Rosmin Mohamed, Group CEO of Perak Corporation Berhad; Dato’ Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin, Chairman of Casuarina Meru Sdn Bhd and Puan Sabrina Ahmad Tah, General Manager of Hotel Casuarina@Meru.

Under this collaboration, TNB will install one (1) 120 kw DC fast charger with dual nozzle (CCS2) and two (2) 22 kw AC chargers at the hotel. These chargers will be supported by dedicated EV parking bays, 24-hour access and a mobile payment application, offering convenience and efficiency to hotel guests and public EV users.

“This is not merely a symbolic event, but a strong manifestation of the state’s commitment to accelerating our transition towards sustainable development,” said YAB Dato’ Seri Saarani bin Mohamad, Menteri Besar of Perak.

“Our long-term aspiration, as outlined in Flagship 12 of Perak Sejahtera 2030 - Water Resources and Renewable Energy, is to cultivate a green economy that benefits the rakyat through innovation, investment and jobs. With Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s leadership in clean energy and Casuarina Meru’s role as a state-owned flagship hotel, this partnership exemplifies how cross-sector collaboration can produce real, measurable outcomes for environmental and economic resilience.”

To date, Perak has installed 149 EV charging bays across 56 locations, achieving almost 30% of its 500-point target by 2025. This latest project underscores the government’s efforts to expand EV infrastructure in urban centres, rural areas, eco-tourism, and commercial zones, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and accessible green transport network.

“With this initiative, we are not only elevating our guest experience, but we are also taking responsibility for our environmental footprint. At the same time, this initiative enhances the hotel’s appeal as a green destination as the EV stations available here are the fastest charging stations among all hotels in Ipoh; and contributes towards positioning Perak as a forward-thinking, eco-conscious tourism destination.” said Dato’ Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin, Chairman of Casuarina Meru Sdn Bhd.

“Hotel Casuarina@Meru, as a government-linked hospitality asset, is proud to be a forerunner in sustainable tourism. These charging stations represent our first major leap into green technology integration, and we hope they inspire more industry players to join the journey toward a low-carbon future. We are honoured to work alongside TNB to make this a reality.”

As part of the ceremony, distinguished guests, including the Menteri Besar of Perak, proceeded to the hotel’s designated EV charging zone to witness a live demonstration of the charger system using Proton’s e.MAS, the national carmaker’s fully electric vehicle. The hands-on experience provided real-time insights into the charger’s capabilities and user-friendly interface, showcasing how Malaysian-made EV technology fits into the broader push for green mobility.

Powered by TNB’s Elektron brand, the chargers will be installed and operational by Q3 2025, adding to Malaysia’s national goal of deploying 10,000 EV chargers by 2025—a target currently 36% achieved. This project aligns with the federal call for more substantial ESG alignment in infrastructure and business planning.

Datuk Redza Rafiq, the Chief Executive of PKNPk added:
“As part of Perak’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, we have taken proactive steps to incorporate renewable energy solutions across various aspects of business operations under the PKNPk group. As part of the effort to complete the ecosystem, solar panels have been mounted on the rooftop of the Casuarina Convention Centre and the hotel’s parking rooftop, enabling us to harness clean energy, reduce our carbon footprint, and strengthen our role as a champion of green hospitality in the state. In addition, solar-powered streetlights have been installed at Bulatan Sultan Azlan Shah, enhancing safety while reducing energy consumption.”

With PKNPk’s strategic leadership and Perak Corporation Berhad’s diversified operational portfolio across infrastructure, property, logistics, and tourism, this initiative affirms Perak’s readiness to lead as a green-forward and investment-friendly state.

The event signals not just an infrastructure upgrade, but a shared vision—one where innovation, sustainability, and public-private partnership fuel Perak’s next era of growth.
