Caltex Champions STEM and Food Sustainability in East Coast Schools

Following the success of its pilot phase in Johor, Caltex Malaysia has officially launched Phase 2 of the Caltex Fuel Your School programme in the East Coast region. The initiative, in collaboration with MyKasih Foundation and Havva Agrotech, aims to enhance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning while reinforcing food sustainability in schools and communities in Malaysia.

Officially kicking off at SK Kubang Kerian 2 in Kota Bharu, Phase 2 involves 15 schools in the state of Kelantan, adopted by local Caltex service stations. Each school was given its own aquaponic set, including essential tools and seeds, with Havva Agrotech conducting a Food Security Workshop, enabling students to cultivate crops on school grounds through 21st century learning.

“Caltex Malaysia is thrilled to have the opportunity to guide young minds towards STEM learning and sustainable agriculture. As we have seen, this initiative has provided better opportunities for schools through providing a brighter future for the next generation. This programme has far reaching benefits as it also equips students as well as teachers with lifelong skills for new ways of cultivation and modern agriculture. We are immensely grateful to MyKasih Foundation, Havva Agrotech, and the participating schools for their collaboration in this impactful journey,” stated Dean Gilbert, Country Chairman of Caltex Malaysia.

Tn. Hj. Zulkilnain bin Hasan, Assistant Principal of SK Kubang Kerian 2 shared, “Our students have grown accustomed to the usual way of growing crops, and the aquaponics system has piqued their curiosity even more with how crops can be cultivated in a different way. They have reached out to our science teachers with questions about how it works, and it’s truly heartening how they’re putting their inquisitive minds to work. We are immensely grateful to Caltex Malaysia for providing our students with this opportunity to expand their STEM-sustainable agriculture knowledge, as it has positively impacted our students.”

Building on Success
Caltex Malaysia gained remarkable success for the first phase of their Fuel Your School programme in Johor, with the 15 schools harvesting a collective total of 821 kg of vegetables and fishes for the year 2024. The fresh produce even bolstered school food programmes and positively benefited 2,752 beneficiaries, including students, teachers, and canteen operators within the local community.

Building upon this momentum, Phase 2 extends the initiative’s impact by integrating the same sustainable practices into Kelantan schools. Besides the provision of the aquaponic sets, students were guided to their school's aquaponics system to further enhance their learning, where they received a practical demonstration on operating and maintaining the system. They also had the opportunity to plant seedlings first-hand, reinforcing their understanding of sustainable agriculture and STEM applications.

With continued school adoption, active community involvement, and public participation through the purchase of school-grown produce, the programme hopes to achieve similar results to its first phase.

The Caltex Fuel Your School initiative, a social investment effort by Caltex Malaysia, aims to help government schools enhance public education facilities by giving underprivileged students a chance to experience good quality classroom learning. This in turn improves the quality of life within communities and broader societies where the company operates, building trust and fostering long-term positive relationships.
